Mixed lot (2 items): Indonesia, Java and Madura: two unusual kris daggers with sheaths.
1: A so-called ‘execution kris’, with an unusually long and thin, double-edged pamor blade. The hilt is made of dark brown wood in a typical Javanese shape. The sheath consists of brown, shiny precious wood, with a ‘shoe’ made of black wood. A small repair to the sheath (lower ‘boat’, glued). A rare piece. L: c. 67 cm.
2: A ceremonial kris from the island of Madura. With a straight, double-edged blade made of very beautifully forged pamor iron, and with a bone hilt, perfectly carved in typical Madura style. The ring between the blade and hilt (‘mendak’) displays remains of gilding. The sheath features a ‘boat’ (‘wranka’) made of brown, shiny precious wood. Additionally, it is cloaked in quality silver and very finely engraved with decorations of leafy tendrils and hatchings on the front side. The back is plain. A good item with beautiful, shiny usage patina (hilt!) and only minor age damage (minor pieces broken off on the edge of the ‘boat’). L: 45.5 cm.
