Two beautiful hilts of kris daggers, in the stylised form of a Garuda, the ‘mount’ of the Hindu god Vishnu in the shape of an eagle.
1: A kris hilt made of old ivory from the Buginese in South Sulawesi (formerly known as Celebes). The typical, flat angled and highly abstract form of the ‘bird of the gods’, Garuda, is decorated with a relief of dense blossoms and leafy tendrils across its entire surface. On its ‘belly’ it displays an inscription with Arabic characters. L: c. 9 cm.
2: Kris hilt in the form of a stylised Garuda from Sumatra. Carved in hard, brown wood. Despite featuring the head of a bird, this piece depicts a ‘humanised’ animal with added coiffure, sketched arms and legs. The surface is almost completely covered with spirals in relief. L: c. 9 cm.
Both objects show very old usage patina and no damage: 19th century. (ME) ASA

Provenance: German private collection.

Lit.: ‘Traditional weapons of the Indonesian Archipelago’ by A. G. van Zonneveld, ill. 229, 231, 252, 253.
