Lotto No. 202

Vietnam; tribe: Black Yao; A bangle made of silver, with ends in the form of dragon heads and enamel decoration.

Vietnam; tribe: Black Yao; A bangle made of silver, with ends in the form of dragon heads and enamel decoration. - Tribal Art

A hollowed bangle made of good-quality silver. In the middle a finely hallmarked, dense decoration of small triangles and circles. Two carefully embossed dragons at both ends, overlaid with blue and green enamel. Bangles with ends in the form of dragon heads, without enamel, can be found in Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan, as well as among the Yao and Hmong, from North Thailand and Laos to Vietnam. However, this special technique combining silver jewellery with blue and green enamel is used mainly by the so-called Black Yao, from the area around the town of Sin Ho in northern Vietnam.
The dragon motif originally comes from China and was adopted by the Yao. A very interesting old specimen. First half of the 20th century; DM: 9 cm x 9.5 cm (exterior), 6 cm x 6.5 cm (interior), 2 cm thick. (ME)
