India: A ‘Bastar bronze’ in the form of a drummer with the head of a god.
A traditional, so-called ‘Bastar bronze’, produced by migrant casters for the tribal population (‘adivasi’) in villages of the federal states Orissa, Bihar, Maharashtra, Bengal, etc. Made of yellow cast-alloy (brass), executed with ‘waste mould’ casting. This finely crafted ‘Bastar bronze’ displays a standing drummer. His head is reminiscent of traditional depictions of the god, Bhairava (a manifestation of the god, Shiva). With two horns and a blossom crest. H: 27 cm. (ME)
