India: A large, painted bull’s head made of wood from a cult wagon or temple.

India: A large, painted bull’s head made of wood from a cult wagon or temple. - Tribal Art

The large head of a bull (or an ox), made of hard, heavy wood, very realistically carved and decoratively painted. Main colours: white, red and yellow-gold (with some black, blue and green). This bull’s head probably originates from southern India, from a figure on a large cult wagon or a temple. The long, red horns are attached by means of short iron bands on the head. Iron bands and nails are located on the back rim and on the underside for reinforcement. Two old cavities on the underside and two rectangular, continuous holes on the left and right accommodated for the mounting and ‘locking’ of the head. A rare, large object, with age-related damage resulting from long-term use: old fractures on both ears, colour scuffed, cracks etc. 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century; H: c. 20 cm, L: c. 90 cm, W: c. 30 cm (horns). (ME)
