Such standard finials, called ‘alam’ (plural: ’alem’), made of iron or bronze, are found throughout the Near East, from Turkey and Iran, to Arabia and India, to the large, Islamic brotherhoods and dervish orders. They were carried on long poles during sacred processions or installed during gatherings.
The present ‘alam’ is made of cast bronze and consists of a sacred inscription in Arabic letters in an openwork medallion (above) as well as of a beautifully-shaped socket in the guise of a double dome, with all-round line decoration, to be placed atop a long wooden pole (below). Above this socket, an old original repair executed in iron is visible. 19th century or earlier. H: 35.4 cm. (ME)
