A shield of the Sukuma from Northwest Tanzania, south of Lake Victoria. Made of buffalo hide in a characteristic, oval shape, ‘drawn’ on both long sides. With an arched diagonal ridge in the centre and with a central shield boss. The shield is stretched towards the back by means of leather bands on a vertical wooden rod. On the same rod, the back of the grip is wrapped with leather bands. A visibly very old object with usage patina (see grip!) and a small original repair with copper wire. First third of the 20th century; h: 76 cm, W: 41 cm. (ME)
Lit.: ‘Afrikanische Schilde’ by Plaschke & Zirngibl, ill. 14.
