Nkundu, Konda, Democratic Republic of Congo: A ceremonial and prestige sword with a wooden sheath and fine decoration.
A shortsword as a ceremonial and prestige weapon. The double-edged iron blade with medial ridge displays geometrical, forged decorations on both sides. The black-dyed wooden hilt is wrapped with brass wire and adorned with decorative nails made of brass. The wooden sheath is also dyed black and displays similar geometrical decorations in relief, as well as brass decorative nails on the front side of the wide, lower end. Minor age-related damage on the blade, hilt and sheath (cracks). End of the 19th century to the first third of the 20th century; L: 46 cm. (ME)
