Maasai, Kenya, Tanzania: A typical sword of the Maasai, with sheath and belt.
A shortsword of the Maasai, called ‘seme’. The double-edged iron blade characteristically widens towards the tip. The narrow hilt is covered in fluted, embossed, light-coloured leather. The sheath consists of red-coloured, embossed and sewn leather. The sheath is trimmed with light-coloured leather below, probably an old original repair of earlier age-related damage. Along with a narrow, original leather belt. A visibly old piece with good usage patina. First half of the 20th century; L: 55 cm. (ME)
