Mangbetu, Democratic Republic of Congo: A ‘trumbash’ sickle knife.

Mangbetu, Democratic Republic of Congo: A ‘trumbash’ sickle knife. - Tribal Art

Typical of the Mangbetu, who live in northern Congo, are these sickle knives, called ‘trumbash’. They are purely ceremonial and prestige weapons of the men, which exist in different executions and materials. Always characteristic, however, is the double-edged, sickle-shaped curved iron blade with medial ridge. Here with two holes forged as decorations. The wooden hilt with a thick plinth is partly twisted with brass wire, as well as wrapped with flat copper bands. With usage patina and in good condition. First half of the 20th century; H: 39 cm. (ME)
