Luba-Hemba, Rep. of Congo: A ceremonial and prestige axe of the Hemba, with a beautiful head of a woman.
A prestige axe of the Luba-Hemba, with a long blade made of local, forged iron. Both sides with three forged decorative spikes on each edge. The shaft is made of wood, dyed dark brown, top decorated with geometrical lines in relief and a jagged border. On the shaft below sits a beautiful, three-dimensional woman’s head with typical, protruding Hemba hairstyle, plaited on the back in a cross-shape. A perfect, elegant object with good usage patina (on the hilt!). In excellent condition, no damage. First half of the 20th century; H:40 cm, W: 28 cm (along the blade). (ME)
