Madagascar, tribe: Sakalava: A female grave figure.

Madagascar, tribe: Sakalava: A female grave figure. - Tribal Art

The Sakalava, in western Madagascar, used to place standing female figures, such as this one, on graves outdoors. Made of lightweight, light-coloured wood, with bent arms, the hands resting on the abdomen. The sculpture was visibly designed with clothing (underwear and a sort of brassiere). On the back the remnants of an originally green colouring. As this figure stood outdoors for many years and was constantly exposed to rain and wind, it displays a corresponding, old patina with weather-related cracks and impressive erosion. First third of the 20th century; h: 64 cm. (ME)

Lit.: ‘The Tribal Arts of Africa’ by Jean-Baptiste Bacquart, ill. p. 205, fig. 4; ‘African Art in American Collections’ by Robbins & Nooter, ill. 1396.
