Chokwe, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia: A very beautiful mother and child figure.

Chokwe, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia: A very beautiful mother and child figure. - Tribal Art

An unusual fine and expertly carved ‘maternité’ of the Chokwe people, made of hard wood. The child sits atop the left hip of the woman and holds her left breast. The body of the mother, with a hairstyle consisting of five crests and a braid on the back, as well as the body of the child are dyed red by means of powdered redwood. The hairstyles and eyebrows are black on both. The mother, who kneels on a black plinth with a hatched rim, also displays very delicately carved, black-dyed scarification marks on the head, chest, abdomen and back, as well as the nipples, which are very typical of her tribe. A stylistically excellent piece, with old, partly shiny patina. Minor cracks on the figures, a crack on the plinth on the front. First half of the 20th century; h: 36 cm.

Compare: ‘Chokwe and their Bantu-Neighbours’ by Jean David and Gerhard Merzeder, ill. p. 116: This present mother and child figure is extremely similar and probably by the same carver! (ME)

Provenance: Private collection of Frank Chantereau, Belgium; Belgian collection.
