Mambila, Nigeria, Cameroon: A rare type of head crest mask.

Mambila, Nigeria, Cameroon: A rare type of head crest mask. - Tribal Art

The Mambila live on either side of the border between Nigeria and Cameroon. The present Mambila mask, made of wood and dyed black, is worn aslant on the head (head crest mask). It displays a typical tall coiffure in nine symmetrical bulges at the parting of the hair, and an accentuated flat, large face with small ears on either side. Under long eyebrows are two small coffee bean eyes near a flat, large nose. The mouth is sketched in relief by means of two rows of teeth. An old piece of leather with brown hair is attached under it as a ‘beard’. A rectangular, pierced projection extends from the chin. A very beautiful and rare mask with excellent, old patina (also on the reverse and on the inside)! Minor age damage. First third of the 20th century; H: 30 cm. (ME)
