Yoruba, Nigeria: A ‘Shango club’ in figural form.
Objects belonging to the cult of the powerful god of thunder and lightning, ‘Shango’, are recognisable on the basis of the double axe symbol. This male figure carries the double axe of the god Shango on its head. It was either placed on an altar as a ‘votive gift’, or it was carried as a ‘Shango club’ during rituals and processions. The figure is made of brown wood and dyed black. It displays the double axe in the upper section, with originally six ‘eyes’ on the front and back, a finely executed hairstyle, scarification marks on the face and shoulders, and amulets worn around the neck on the chest as well as on the back. With good, old shiny patina as a result of protracted use. Remains of rubbed-in powdered redwood on the body. Hardly any age-related damage. End of the 19th century, first third of the 20th century; H: 35 cm. (ME)
