Baule, Ivory Coast: A beautiful male figure of a ‘spirit spouse’, called ‘blolo bian’.
An accomplished and perfectly carved standing figure of a so-called ‘spirit spouse’ of a married Baule woman (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 38). Made of hard, reddish brown wood and entirely dyed black. With a very finely manufactured hairstyle and the typical tribal scarification marks on the face, neck (on the reverse), abdomen and back. With good traces of usage (colour scuffed at the edges, a minor tear to the back). First half of the 20th century; H: 34 cm. (ME)
