With these ‘portrait masks’, called ‘mblo’, the carvers of the Baule people attempt to portray individual members of the village community, who subsequently perform entertaining dances. The present ‘mblo mask’ consists of hard, brown wood and is entirely dyed black. It features a finely made, three-piece hairstyle, typical tribal scarification marks on the forehead, temples and cheeks, as well as one decorative brass nail on top of the forehead. A piece with good usage patina (on the inside!) and two small pieces broken off on the back rim. First half of the 20th century; H: 33 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Jan Lundberg, Malmö; Viennese private collection.
Lit.: ‘Baule. African Art - Western Eyes’ by Susan M. Vogel, ill. p. 95, 135, 140, 143, 162, 165, 168 et passim.
