Mixed lot (2 items): Lobi, Burkina Faso: Two small ‘bateba figures’, a man and a woman.
Among the Lobi, such figures, called ‘bateba’, are carved on behalf of the village priest and soothsayer. The invisible spirits of the Lobi, called ‘thila’, temporarily ‘live’ in these figures. Thus, the soothsayer can establish a contact with the spirits. The present bateba figures are made of light-coloured, hard wood, stylistically accomplished and finely carved, of dark brown colour. With good, old patina and only minor age damage (small cracks to the feet and navel). First half of the 20th century; H: 18 cm (woman); 14 cm (man). (ME)
