Jan Pauwel Gillemans I
(Antwerp 1618–after 1675) A still life of fruit and vegetables with a Chinese porcelain bowl and brass vessels, oil on canvas, 41 x 61 cm, framed
The Antwerp still life painter Jan Pauwel Gillemans I is known for his large-format still lifes of fruit and flowers in the style of de Heem. Relatively few small-format still lifes of fruit are known by Gillemans, although they were popular among his contemporaries as cabinet pieces. As the present work shows, Gillemans preferred narrow views in a small format, in order to focus on the meticulously executed objects in the painting. A comparable painting by Gillemans was sold at Koller in Zurich in 2013.
