Lotto No. 100

Austrian or German Court Painter, circa 1720

Austrian or German Court Painter, circa 1720 - Dipinti antichi

A Portrait of four children from a noble family decorating a bust of Flora with a wreath of flowers, one wearing Hungarian dress and the cross of the Order of Malta,
oil on canvas, 195 x 140 cm, framed

Giancarlo Sestieri has suggested an alternative attribution for the present painting to the Neapolitan painter Carlo Amalfi (written communication).

Alternative attributions to Jakob Wessels and other central european artists have been suggested, as well as Andreas Möller, a rare court artist of Danish origin, who was active in Vienna in circa 1720.

The depiction of hungarian dress, does not automatically identify the family as members of the Magyar nobility. Hungarian or Polish dress was an international fashion for children in the 18th century, as is evident in many contemporary works, such as Giuseppe Baldrighi´s portrait of the Duke of Parma and his family.
