Lotto No. 14 #

Hans van Essen

Hans van Essen - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp c.1590–1642 Amsterdam)
A still life with an earthenware jug, herring, bread and onions
oil on canvas, 60 x 95.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Vienna;
Sale Dorotheum, Vienna, 3 October 2001, lot 138;
where purchased by the present owner

Little is known about Hans van Essen. There is only one known signed painting by him (see Christie’s, Amsterdam, 4 November 2012, lot 49). The superior quality of the present composition suggests that the artist’s still lifes have possibly been attributed to artists that are better known today.

One fact is known which is that Hans van Essen’s first wife’s estate points to a family connection with the still life artist Jacob Foppens van Es (Antwerp c. 1596-1666) (see A. van der Willigen and F.G. Meijer, A Dictionary of Dutch and Flemish Still-life Painters Working in Oils, 1525-1725, Leiden, 2003, p. 80).
