The present work is related to a composition by Andrea Solario of which at least three autograph versions are known (see D. A. Brown, Andrea Solario, Milan, 1987, pp. 212/13, nos. 50 and 51). One is in the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig and another in the John G. Johnson Collection in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia and another autograph version was sold at Sotheby’s, London, on 7 December 2011 (lot 4).
The present composition differs from these compostions in colouring and the inclusion of a blue ribbon to tie Christ’s cloak. At least two of the other versions appear to have early French provenances and it is likely that they were executed during Solario’s stay in France under the patronage of Cardinal Georges I d’Ambroise at Gaillon.
