porcelain, body with gilt rims, ledge with light turquoise ground, 3 medallions with a dancing Cupid and 2 mythical creature painted in bistre on a red ground, 6 reserves with gilt beaded rims, zoomorphic mythical creature on a grey ground painted en grisaille, neck and 3 tympana with grotesques and leafy stems on a caramel ground, well with gilt meander frieze, hexagonal reserve with arched frieze, 3 mythological figures painted in bistre on a red ground, Ø 24.2 cm, to the underside 2 gilt rims, St. Petersburg, Russia, red-gilt mark of Tsar Alexander III, 1881-1894, year mark 1886 (Ru)
Lit.: Galina Agarkowa, Natalija Petrowa, 250 Jahre Lomonossow Porzellanmanufaktur St. Petersburg, 1744-1994, Desertina 1994, p. 61, towards the end of the 19th century work began on the production of the large Rafaelewski dinner service, which got its name from the decoration based on Raphael’s frescoes. The final design for this service was worked out in direct collaboration with Alexander III.
