Paolo Triscornia was trained in Rome and appointed professor at the Academy in Carrara in 1805. He was active as a sculptor in Carrara, St. Petersburg and from 1818 in Moscow. The motif of the sleeping cupid was popular in ancient Rome and was again well received in the Renaissance. In around 1700 the sculptor Giovanni Fortini (1670-1736 Florenz) created a bronze, from which the cupid here is thought to derive.
