Kashgar,
East Turkestan, c. 236 x 114 cm, about 1800, museum-quality carpet in "Herat flower style" with a repeat of 3 x 6 vertical, coffered guls framed with swastikas and a three-flower border, in which a change of direction of the stems creates the impression of continuous tendrils. Although this is a classic Khotan design, this piece is probably not from the Khotan region on the grounds of its cotton foundation. Consistently very low pile in keeping with the carpet’s age, both ends with woven finishes preserved, side edges rebound. (MA) Lit.: Ulrich Schürmann, Zentral-Asiatische Teppiche; Hans Bidder, Teppiche aus Ost-Turkestan.
