Greece, c. 83 x 37 cm, about 1750, exquisite silk shawl with silk and metal embroidery, textiles with comparable museum quality are extremely rare and have only a small number of collectors, the English collector Roderick Taylor is considered one the world’s leading experts in this field, as with the present item ships were among the favourite subjects of the inhabitants of the island heavily influenced by Ottoman taste, at both ends are two finely stitched, naively executed two-mast sailing ships with human figures on and under deck as well as in the rigging, the centre of the shawl depicts a wind rose surrounded by sea monsters and figures with fish-like abdomens, some repairs to the delicate foundation, possible embroidered repairs to the motifs can be hardly detected, overall lined with silk decorative fringes.
