South Sumatra (Indonesia), c. 190 x 90 cm, first quarter of the 20th century, silk ceremonial shawl from the Palembang region, “lawons” were worn by married women on important, ceremonial occasions and are part of a bride’s equipment, the use of luxurious silk imported from China suggests that these textiles symbolise prestige and power, these cloths are manufactured in so-called ‘tritik’ technique in which the pin and the thread pull the silk together to the effect that during the dyeing procedure some parts remain undyed, the minimalistic expressiveness of these luxurious textiles is reminiscent of Mark Rothko, end damage, some small holes, stained.
