Lotto No. 15

Painted wall hanging,

Painted wall hanging, - Mobili e tappeti

Grave (The Netherlands), ca. 276 x 237 cm, 18th/19th century. As the Baroque world expanded, hitherto closed rooms were opened up and there was a greater need for precious materials such as wall paintings and tapestries to furnish the exposed walls. As the tapestry workshops flourished in France and Belgium a decorative art namely the painted wall hanging emerged in the Baroque and Rococo period. At first these were large pieces on linen, executed in pastel lime-based colours and watercolours and closely followed the character and general effect of the woven wall hangings, executed by the cartoon makers of the tapestry factories. This technique spread from France to Belgium, South German, Switzerland, Austria and parts of Yugoslavia. The motifs were taken from existing Gobelins tapestries, from the pattern books of the engravers. The start of the 19th century saw the end of the painted wall hanging as wallpaper took its place. The present piece with its Roman scene was probably purchased by the family of Industrialists Borckenstein-Quirini of Burgau/Steiermark around 1850. The left side has been cut and has some slight ageing. Both ends have been fitted for hanging. Signed in reverse with the place name "Grave". (MA)

Provenance: Private collection Burgau/Steiermark

Lit.: Trude Aldrian, Bemalte Wandbespannungen des XVIII. Jahrhunderts; Hermann Schmitz, Bildteppiche, Geschichte der Gobelinwirkerei.
