Lotto No. 90

Kobayashi Gyokunen

Kobayashi Gyokunen - Arte asiatica

(active in the Meiji period)
25.5 x 18.5 cm. Two volumes. Rare, complete edition of the album, “Tama kagami” (Jewel Mirror). Volume 1 (Heaven): Folding plate, one side poetry. 24 single pages, colour illustrations. Volume 2 (Earth): A folding plate, 25 single pages, colour illustrations, one page signatures and seals (Gyokunentei and Gyokunen) and one page colophon. Printer and publisher: Fujizawa shuppanbu, Kyoto. Dating: 11th month 1901 (Meiji 34). Both volumes spaced out with tissue paper between the illustrations (some missing). Rare (as a complete album). (BA)

Fine impression and colours, good condition with traces of usage.

So-called ‘sample books’ were very popular in the Meiji and Taisho periods. They display works by well-known, but also lesser-known, painters and graphic artists. The early sample books appear to concentrate rather on traditional, detailed textile or paper designs, whereas later books contain wider ranges of images. The illustrations developed partly into independent artworks. The print quality of these albums is always excellent.
