China, Canton, 19th century.
Wood and lacquer. Underside on four feet above a board, with openwork carved floral decorations. The lid with inscription and cyclical dating xin wei (1811 or 1871) and a scene painted in gilt lacquer before a magistrate, to which a crate of schnapps is probably being delivered from Fenyang (Province: Shanxi). Small trivets made of wood inside the box. Several cracks. 28 x 42 x 23.5 cm. (BA)
The lid probably not original but from the same time as the base.
