A pair of archaistic zhi cups
China, Qing dynasty, 18th century or earlier.
Celadon-grey jade with white and brown inclusions. Foot, handles and lid are shaped in the guise of lotus flowers. Two low-relief mythical creatures, a hunter and a stag flank both sides of a central lotus flower. The form of the cup and the handles are modelled after the style of the Han period, whilst the three-dimensional lotus décor is reminiscent of the Mughal jades that were fashionable at the Qing court in the 18th century. Two small chips to the edges and one to the inside of the lid. H: 12.5 cm. (BA)
