Giovan Battista Trotti, called Il Malosso
(Cremona 1555-1619 Padua) Study for a „Last Judgement“, pen and brown ink, brown wash, on paper, 40 x 25 cm, inscribed "Palma..." in pen and brown ink at lower margin, mounted, unframed, (Sch)
Provenance:
European private collection.
The attribution of the present drawing was confirmed by Catherine Monbeig Goguel.
Considering the figure of the Archangel Michael with scales and the falling figures at the lower margin the depiction may have been a preliminary study for a „Last Judgement“. The distorted perspective of the figures point to a ceiling- or wall painting. The sheet is comparable to a drawing in the Louvre („Multiplication of the Loaves"; Inv. 1085) which shows similar distinct contour lines and indicates light and shade with brown and black wash. A larger number of drawings by Giovan Battista Trotti are kept in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan including a study for "Christ and God seated on clouds" (Inv. 486) and a „Martyrdom of Saint John“ (Inv. 1457).
