Lotto No. 187

Indonesia, Island of Nias: Sword of a chief or an outstanding warrior.

Indonesia, Island of Nias: Sword of a chief or an outstanding warrior. - Tribal Art

A sword from the Island of Nias, southwest of Sumatra. With single-edged iron blade in a typical Nias shape. The hilt is made of wood and dyed black. Carved with characteristic ‘Lasara’ motifs: a dragon head with open mouth and fangs. Normally, a human figure sits on top (here partly broken off). The hilt ring is made of cast brass, with grooved decoration all around. The sheath consists of wood, in 2 halves, held together by means of 14 brass strips. On a finial on the upper end of the sheath a so-called ‘magic ball’ (as a protective amulet) is attached, typical of Nias swords. The pierced finial is there, but the ball is missing. The piece has a good, old patina and minor age damage (some pieces broken off of the hilt): 19th century, early 20th century; L: 68 cm. (ME)
