Buddha Amitabha is especially venerated in Tibetan Lamaism as ‘the original Buddha of the pure lands’. In the present figure, Buddha Amitabha (or Buddha Amitayus) sits in a meditation pose on a double lotus plinth. He wears a crown with five small glass pearls (or imitation stones). In his hands, laid one on top of the other, stands the vessel with the ‘elixir of eternal life’. The figure consists of a ‘waste mould casting' made of metal (with high copper content). It is silver-plated and partly fire-gilt. First half of the 20th century; H: 22.8 cm. (ME)
