Lotto No. 169

Thailand: sitting bronze Buddha, with inscription, Ayutthaya style, 16th/17th century.

Thailand: sitting bronze Buddha, with inscription, Ayutthaya style, 16th/17th century. - Tribal Art

A Buddha figure made of cast bronze. In the ‘earth-touching gesture’, on one geometrical and one simple lotus throne. An inscription on the front side of the lower plinth. The bronze figure has visible remains of red underpaint, with overlaid gilding. The extremely beautiful head displays all the features of the Ayutthaya style: accentuated eyebrows, hanging eyelids, outlined mouth and chin. The hairstyle consists of curled knops and the ushnisha, the typical oval at the top of the head of the Buddha, surmounted by the ‘flame of enlightenment’. Its casting core is almost completely preserved. A typical sculpture of the Ayutthaya middle period (15th-18th century). With good patina and minor age damage: a tear and small pieces broken off to the right and on the back of the lower plinth. H: 32.5 cm. (ME)

Provenance: German private collection.
