A sword of a very old type used in northwestern Ethiopia and central Sudan (Kordofan region). With a double-edged iron blade with chamfered middle furrow and local blacksmith’s mark: two opposing crescents on each side. With a large, x-shaped iron cross guard. The wooden handle is wrapped in leather and terminates in a flat, round pommel. The wood sheath is covered with brown leather, wider towards the lower end, and is richly ornamented with a geometrical décor of lines and circles. With leather carrying belt and a plaited leather string on two iron rings. This sword type probably goes back to European models of the late Middle Ages (Crusades).
