Mixed lot (15 items): objects of the Tuareg; from the Sahara in South Algeria, Niger, Mali, South Morocco: - Tribal Art

1: a saddle blanket for a Tuareg camel saddle (‘tarik’). Made of leather, with rich geometrical decoration on both sides (symmetrical): painted in red, black, green and yellow colours. Applications of cut green leather. Both narrow sides feature pendants made of three double, large leather bands with cut decoration, as well as with bundles of black and white leather stripes. Leather objects of the Tuareg are produced by female blacksmiths (‘ineden’). L: 102 cm, W: 32 cm (middle) to 55 cm (outer edge).
2: An arm dagger (worn on the upper arm or forearm by means of a leather strap) in typical Tuareg shape. With locally forged iron blade (L: 68 cm), characteristic handle made of brass with copper mount and geometric engraving (with 3 end points, as on the horn of a Tuareg saddle). The sheath and the leather carrying ring are dyed black, green and red, with impressed decoration, and with a 'shoe' made of partially engraved brass, iron and copper. L: 58 cm.
3: A small leather bag, to be carried on a strap around the neck. Made of black, green, red and yellow dyed leather. With elaborate impressed decoration, partially backed with red fabric, and embellished with colourful, fabric and leather fringes. The upper sleeve (black and green) can be slid upwards on the carrying strap. Under bi-colour leather flaps are two pockets for everyday objects such as money, documents etc. Tuareg men carry these bags across their chest. L: c. 30 cm, W: 11 cm (the bag alone).
4: Musical instrument: A one-stringed 'violin' with long wood handle and twisted gut strings. The resonating chamber consists of half a calabash, overlaid with leather and stitched on the back. The bow is missing. L: 58 cm, W: 11 cm.
5: Tuareg clothes: 2 pairs of sandals. A pair of brown leather sandals, each decorated with one small, green leather rhomb in the upper section. With visible, old signs of wear. The other pair is made of black, green, red and yellow dyed leather with an elaborate pattern. More beautiful than the other pair and less worn. Additionally, 2 tassels of reddish, black and green leather stripes, each hanging on a plaited, black leather band. Probably used as ornaments of a camel saddle or of a transport bag. Also a large leather belt, coloured green on the outside, with metal buckle. L: 110 cm, W: 5 cm. A round cap of white fabric, embroidered with red and black, all-round zigzag lines. A white shawl of thin fabric and a floor-length ‘dress’ with a breast pocket and embroidery at the neckline, as well as a blue shirt with blue trousers. The trousers with pockets and white string decoration on both sides.
All 15 Tuareg objects: first half to mid-20th century. (ME)
