Lotto No. 161

Persia: fine miniature painting with 3 painted images.

Persia: fine miniature painting with 3 painted images. - Tribal Art

An original Persian combination picture: a frame, with palmette motif, painted in gold lacquer on black ground. On the reverse of this frame is a picture with 4 women, a child, an angel and a bird in a landscape (probably a sacred scene). On the front of the frame is a cavity with a violet fabric. A wooden plate, painted on both sides, front and back, with a miniature image fits perfectly in this cavity of the ‘interchangeable frame’: one side depicts a beautiful sitting woman, with blossoms in her black hair, jewels, a blouse, a jacket and a bright red skirt (or wide trousers?). She holds a glass and a bottle, sitting under a red canopy in front of a window, with a tree landscape and a cloudy sky in the background. A flower basket in the foreground. On the reverse of this interchangeable painted plate is a scene with three women, a child, two men, two birds and an angel in an idyllic imaginary landscape (a Christian religious scene?). Overall in good condition, slight flaking on the edges. Dimensions: 22 cm x 14.5 cm (frame), 18.7 cm x 11.2 cm (two-sided painted plate). 19th century; Qajar dynasty. (ME)
