Persia: a Safavid jug with elaborate silver décor,

Persia: a Safavid jug with elaborate silver décor, - Tribal Art

17th-18th century. A Persian jug made of brass, probably intended as a gift. The curved brass handle features a lion head and a dragon head. The retracted, round spout, the bell-shaped body and the handle are richly decorated with all-round inlays and damascening of good-quality silver: with typical, Safavid leafy tendrils in bands and medallions. In the central, all-round décor band are two text fields separated by medallions with leafy tendrils, containing outlined Arabic inscriptions of silver: ‘The wedding is near’ (‘Al-farah tarib’), and ‘Patience is key (in order to achieve your goal)’ (‘Al-sabr mufter’). Style and decoration of this jug are typical of the epoch of the Safavid dynasty in Persia (1501-1722). An object of very good quality, in mint condition! H: 18 cm, DM: 6.2 cm (spout in the upper section). (ME)
