Among the Luguru and Kaguru in central Tanzania these posts are placed at the centre of initiation huts or in the middle of open-air, fenced areas used for initiation rites. The initiates sit at the foot of this post. Among the Gogo people, also resident in central Tanzania, very similar objects are used as posts for verandas and houses. The house posts of the Gogo also have sacred significance. The form of the large, flat upper section of the present initiation post symbolises the women’s headdress, the inserted, abstract breasts indicate fertility. With four angular projections along the high part of the post, with round cross-section. With good, old usage patina. These posts are rare in Western Museums or private collections! Early or first half of the 20th century; H: 1.95 m. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian private collection.
