Kwere, Tanzania: An old trough zither with a half figure.
An old trough zither, called 'Inanga', made of brown, hard wood. A typical musical instrument of the tribes of East Tanzania. On the upper end of the handle is a figural torso with angular arms before its chest and abdomen. The head features slicked back hair, which indicates its origin from the tribe of the Kwere. The rectangular, elongated and slightly concave ‘trough’ displays six holes in the upper and lower sections, through which the strings were pulled. Two holes at the centre of the trough for attaching a pumpkin calabash as resonating chamber on the back of the 'Inanga'. This instrument has very old, black, encrusted patina and good traces of usage on the handle. Early 20th century; L: 78.5 cm. (ME)
Literature: 'Sounding Forms. African Musical Instruments' by Marie-Thérése Brincard, ill. p. 99, fig. 20; 'Africa. Musica y arte' by Elena Martinez-Jacquet & David Serra, ill. p. 78/79, fig. 34.
