Makonde, Tanzania, Mozambique: A typical 'Lipiko' helmet mask, dyed black. - Tribal Art

This helmet or crest mask of the Makonde is made of lightweight, light-coloured wood, carved thin and dyed black. It displays the head of an adult Makonde man, with complete, typical tribal scarification marks in the face. Executed in fine relief pattern. Remains of the mask’s coiffure made of real human hair. A piece with very good, old usage patina on the outside as well as on the inside, and with age damage as a result of long use: a fracture under the right ear of the mask. First half of the 20th century; H: 26 cm. (ME)
