Makonde, Tanzania, Mozambique: Rare face mask made of light-coloured wood, coloured in brown.

Makonde, Tanzania, Mozambique: Rare face mask made of light-coloured wood, coloured in brown. - Tribal Art

Among the Makonde, large helmet masks (‘Lipiko’) are more widespread. The smaller face masks are rare and are oft attributed exclusively to the Makonde tribes in Tanzania, where they are worn by dancers on high stilts at the conclusion of initiation ceremonies of young boys and girls. The present face is made of lightweight, light-coloured wood, dyed brown. It displays all the typical features of the Makonde style: accentuated eyes, a large, flat nose, large, bulging lips, a characteristic, small Makonde hairstyle made of real human hair, as well as scarification marks. Good patina, with minor age damage (some pieces broken off on the back edge). First half of the 20th century. H: 25.5 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian private collection.
