Luba-Hemba, Dem. Rep. of Congo: A ‘Kabeja’ Janus figure.

Luba-Hemba, Dem. Rep. of Congo: A ‘Kabeja’ Janus figure. - Tribal Art

These double figures, called 'Kabeja', always represent a man and a woman, back to back. They represent the ‘ancestor’ couple of the Hemba people and are preserved in the houses of the clan and village chiefs. They have a protective function for the members of the clan and their rituals. The present ‘Kabeja figure’ is made of a piece of hard wood and dyed black. At its top, in the upper section, it has an open cavity for 'magic substances'. A piece in perfect, typical Luba-Hemba style, with good patina and minor age damage (some pieces broken off at the round base plate). First half of the 20th century; H: 28.5 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Jo Christiaens, Bruges.
