Chokwe or Lunda, Angola, Congo: A ceremonial and prestige axe with carved chief head and ‘crown’.
A relatively small prestige axe with a anchor-shaped blade made of locally forged, African iron. The blade is additionally hallmarked with two ornamental lines on each side. The shaft is made of wood, carved with geometrical relief-decoration and ends with the stylised head of a bearded chief wearing a helmet-like 'crown' with five projections. The blade is attached to the wood shaft under the chin of the bearded man. First half to mid-20th century; L: 36 cm (in total). (ME)
