Mixed lot (2 items): Duala, Cameroon: 2 ceremonial paddles. - Tribal Art

Two ceremonial paddles of the Duala people, who live in the territory along the southwestern Atlantic coast in Cameroon.
Both paddles are made of brown, hard wood and stylistically similar: a long, straight, lancet shaped shovel, a long handle with round cross-section, the upper end of the handle is flat with openwork. The surfaces of both shovels and the upper ends of the handles are elaborately carved with patterns of straight lines, zigzag bands and grids in relief on both sides.
The older of the two ceremonial paddles was originally dyed black and displays heavy traces of wear on its handle. With very good age patina as a result of protracted use. The younger, undyed brown paddle also displays visible usage patina on the handle. With a small loss an the end of the handle. L: both paddles 150 cm each. Early to mid-20th century. (ME)
