A old ‘Egungun dance crest’ with a dyed red face, with beard and typical tribal scarification marks. Between the large, black and blue coloured ears the head crest mask carries a so-called ‘speaking drum’ (‘kalangu'), which are also used as instruments in the grand mask dances in honour of the god of ancestors 'Egungun'. These dances are performed by men with the aforementioned head crests and in very colourful, large, floor-length costumes. An object with good patina, remains of the fastening elements of the mask costume, age-related damage and original repairs (some pieces broken off on the back and in the upper section). First half of the 20th century; H: 24 cm. (ME)
