Afo, Angas, Nigeria: Large ‘iron money’ for bride price.
A large piece of ‘iron money’ from local iron obtained in an African bloomery, forged and hammered. In the shape of a spade. These items were formerly part of the bride price (as a sort of ‘redemption’ for a woman’s work capacity in the family) among the Afo and Angas in North and Northeast Nigeria. They were a groom’s present to the father of the bride. The full bride price for a woman seems to have once amounted to one of these ‘iron spades’ and two goats.
