Mixed lot (2 items): Baule, Ivory Coast: Rod and gong.
1) A dignitary staff, made of wood, dark brown, full-round carved with 2 figures. The two sculptures are executed in the 'spirit spouse' style with the woman ('Blolo bla') above and the man ('Blolo bian') below. With typical tribal hairstyle and scarification marks. Between the two figures and at the lower end decorated with geometric-abstract designs and slanting lines in relief. H: 110 (in total); the two figures: 32 cm (upper section) and 28 cm (lower section).
2) A gong and mallet. The gong of forged iron and typical Baule shape; the mallet of wood with a bird figure, decorated with brass and iron decorative nails, and with chip-carving decoration. H: 19th cm (gong) and 25 cm (mallet). Both objects with fine used patina. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
