Baule, Ivory Coast: Mask of the ‘Kpan’ type.

Baule, Ivory Coast: Mask of the ‘Kpan’ type. - Tribal Art

A large, female mask of the Baule people, originally carved in light-coloured wood. Both the face, with high eyebrow arches, slit eyes under heavy lids, and the typical tribal scarification marks, and the finely executed hairstyle with high middle comb and hemispheric ‘buttons' on both sides, are dyed black. The stylistically typical ‘jagged border’ is accentuated in black and white. With good, old usage patina, colours scuffed in some areas due to age and minor age damage (some pieces broken off on the back rim). H: 34 cm. First half of the 20th century. This mask of the ‘Kpan’ type belongs to the complex of dances with masks linked to the buffalo god Goli and depicts an old woman. (ME)
